ANTIQUE CARNIVAL ERA GLASS
1907 - late 1930s
WATERLILY & CATTAILS
Marigold Carnival Glass 4" Tumbler, in excellent undamaged antique condition. Three of the top five glass makers produced this design, each with slight variations on the theme. Fenton's had a basketweave pattern around the base; Northwood small ripples, and Dugan - nothing.
Frank and John Fenton
(John later founded Millersburg Glass Co.) introduced America to inexpensive iridized glassware in 1907.
Original Antique Fenton Carnival Glass has no trademark of any kind.
Their innovative process involved spraying hot glass with proprietary solutions of metallic salts to produce a microscopically-thin layer of metal which bonded to the glass on a molecular level. Different salts and multiple sprayings influenced the color and intensity of the iridescence which makes Carnival Glass so beautiful and collectible. Nearly 150 patterns in Carnival Glass are credited to the Fenton Art Glass Company. In the 1970s, Fenton began re-issuing some of their original designs as well as reproducing other makers' patterns, the molds for which they had purchased at liquidation auctions. This
Modern
Carnival Glass bears a
trademark
consisting of the name Fenton, or a script capital "F", in an oval.
Excellent Antique Condition
means that a
listed
item has no decernable post-production damage but may have one or more of the following issues related to the production methods and conditions in the early 1900s which, by today's standards were dirty and dangerous, and Quality Control did not exist: air bubbles not squeezed out by hand-pressing; inclusions of ash from the furnace or debris from dirty conditions;
strands of undisolved metallic salts used as colorant; lines called
straw marks where molten glass was snipped with cool metal shears from the gathering rod, hardened immediately and mixed into the glass like dried paint; marks from shaping tools used to form the edge or influence the shape; mould issues such as incomplete or malformed edges,
rough seams, extra glass at seams, webbed, incomplete or pulled edge points; cooling issues such as
uneven legs or a bowed base causing rocking; heat checks which are internal separations from uneven cooling or burst air bubbles, etc. While these issues may be undesirable in the extreme, they do not qualify as "damage" and will be found to some degree on nearly all Carnival Glass.
